Technician

  • Mrs. Amy J Umstead

Amy is our most Senior Staff member.  She started as part of the Animal Care Team at East Orange Animal Hospital in January 1994.  She quickly became one of the very best Veterinary Assistants both at East Orange Animal Hospital and at the Veterinary Emergency Clinic.

Amy has a  wonderful touch with the pets as well as extensive knowledge, experience and skill in medical/surgical procedures, laboratory testing/ X-rays, and even equipment maintenance .  She is always searching out new challenges and knowledge and always seems to find a bettter way to do things. This made her a natural choice to help train newer team members.  Amy is  cool under pressure always seems to know just what to do in an emergency.

In Sept. 2002, Amy developed a degenerative nerve disease called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD/CRPS) which has affected her ability to do a lot of the "hands-on" care that she enjoys so much.  She has, however, adapted very well and continues to be involved in the everyday care of patients, along with training the technician staff, assisting in client education & being the intermediary between the clients & Doctors!

If there is anything at East Orange Animal Hospital that you need done or questions to have answered,  please speak with Amy.  She is the one person who knows the answer to almost any question you can ask, or where to find the answer!   On any given day you might find Amy helping clients in reception,  trouble-shooting and repairing lab equipment or putting a catheter in a mouse.

Amy has 3 cats, a niece and nephew to spoil and enjoys knitting, sewing, designing & making jewelry, along with helping her husband in their up-start Photography business in all her spare time!  She is also a bit of a movie and anime afficianado, and is insane with movie/TV trivia - it's a blast to try & stump her
    !

Amy truly appreciates all the concern & well-wishes that many of our clients have extended to her!  If you would like additional information on RSD/CRPS (the disease that she suffers from), please visit the following websites:

  • Mrs. Rosa Ortiz

Rosa joined the staff at East Orange Animal Hospital as a Veterinary Assistant in 2003.  Her easy-going attitude, attention to detail and compassionate care contribute to her popularity among staff and patients and her success as part of our team.  Rosa is cool under pressure and brings a measure of calmness into difficult situations.  She is experienced in laboratory,  x-ray, medical and surgical assisting, as well as inpatient and outpatient care. She excels in dental proceedures.  Rosa tends to be a little quiet, but when she speaks she is worth listening to.

Rosa was recently married in July 2006, and is a Mom to 3 young girls, 1 dog, 2 cats and 60 fish!  She has no free time for hobbies.    :  )

  • Rachel Ward

Rachel has been an integral part of the East Orange family since May 2006, and has worked both part-time & currently full-time while working towards her degree.  It was clear from the start that Rachel's work-ethic and zeal for quality patient care is equal only to her attitude and pleasant demeanor.  We are thrilled that Rachel is a part of our team, and are excited to see what path she takes in her studies - we're pulling for her to stay here forever!!

In Rachel's limited spare time between work, school & studying, she enjoys horse-back riding, welding & learning/practicing ASL (sign language).  She also spends time with her boyfriend, her niece & nephew and her dogs (Jessie, Hoss, Bear & Brooke).

In Sept. 2008, Rachel was "moved up" from caring for pets in the kennel area to helping pets & their owners in the exam rooms!  There's no need to worry, Rachel trained the staff that cares for all the pets that vacation with us, so she is still well represented in our kennel area!

  • Maggie Matos

  • Brandy Hurte

Brandy rejoined East Orange Animal Hospital as part of our Animal Care team for a 2nd "tour of duty" in Sept. '09 & we couldn't be happier to have her back!  She originally started at East Orange in 2002 & left for a brief haitus in early '09, but, as a relief to so many clients, patients & the entire staff, she has returned!!.  As one of our senior Veterinary Assistants, Brandy cares for every patient as if they were one of her own.  She has a quiet confidence that seems to calm most animals.  They know they are in good hands with Brandy for x-rays, lab tests, medical or dental procedures.  Hospitalized patients, outpatients and boarders are all lucky enough to get to see Brandy on any given day!

Brandy is Mom to a young daughter, 3 dogs- Cheyenne, Ginger  and Shelby, a cat named Linkin and a guinea pig.  (What is that pig's name, anyway?)

In her spare time Brandy enjoys camping, 4-wheeling and fishing.

  • Megan Erb

Megan has been with East Orange Animal Hospital for 11 years.  She started with us as an Animal Care Assistant, then worked as a Veterinary Assistant for us and part time at the Veterinary Emergency Clinic.  She now is a wonderful asset as a part of our Client Care Team.  Megan seems to remember every pet and every owner that we have seen over the years and coming in is like seeing an old friend.

Megan is Mom to 2 daughters, incuding a brand new arrival she and her husband welcomed at the end of 2004.  She has had many dogs, cats and lizards over the years and currently has 4 dogs and 2 cats. If she ever gets free time, Megan enjoys 4-wheeling and scrapbooking.

  • Amanda Roden

This is Amanda's second "tour of duty" with East Orange Animal Hospital.  She worked with us in 2001 as a veterinary assistant, and returned to us in 2004 as a receptionist after a brief hiatus in South Dakota.   We are thrilled to have her back with us as part of our Client Care Team.  Her quick smile and sunny disposition can make stressful times much easier.  If she cannot answer your question or solve your problem, she will alway get someone who can.
I can almost guarantee that sometime during your conversation with Amanda you are going to smile!

Amanda and Dr. Roden were married in 2006, and Amanda remains with us as a part-time receptionist.  She has an assortment of cats and in her spare time enjoys fishing and shopping - in that order.

Assistants

  • Corene Fry , Canine Behaviorist

Corene is a Canine Behaviorist and teaches the Puppy Classes here at East Orange Animal Hospital.  Her approach to training is to teach you how to communicate effectively and bond with your puppy!

Corene has many years of experience as an animal behaviorist, worked with Animal Planet, and can be seen on T.V. as a co-host of "Pet Pals Unleashed" (airs on Channel 9 - Orange & Channel 98 - Vision TV).

  • Stitch

Stitch was an amazing part of our staff & helped many pets in her time with us from 2002 to 2008.  She worked hard helping pets recover from anesthesia, "supervising" employees & as a blood-donor when she was needed.
Stitch & Amy bonded while she was here, and during the hospital renovations in June 2008, Amy took her home and she stayed!
East Orange was sad to see Stitchy go, but we're very happy that she is living in Kitty-Heaven at Amy's house & has 2 brothers that she can "supervise"! Stitch is THRIVING & is truly the Queen-of-the-Castle.
